Del Webb Kitchens, Ready for a Second Act
Countertops in Anthem tend to come up when a homeowner realizes the original builder tops have now been in place for more than twenty years. Anthem is a Del Webb master plan in the City of Henderson. Henderson annexed the first 2,535 acres in November 1997, home sales started in mid-1998, and the grand opening on October 24, 1998 drew about 3,000 people. Many of those first kitchens still have their original surfaces, and they are ready for something easier to live with.
Built for long stays
Anthem opened with three subdivisions: Sun City Anthem for older buyers, Anthem Country Club around its golf courses, and Coventry Homes at Anthem. Del Webb even offered Sun City Anthem buyers free advice from professional home designers. People who chose these homes tended to plan for the long run, and the countertop questions we hear reflect that: Will it stain? Do I have to seal it? Can I set a hot pan on it? What happens around the sink when the water is this hard?
Low-maintenance answers for each room
Kitchen
Quartz is our usual recommendation. It needs no sealing, resists the mineral film that Henderson's 16-grain water leaves around faucets, and is available in light colors that brighten the darker cabinet finishes common in late-1990s homes.
Bathrooms
For primary baths, a quartz vanity top with a rectangular undermount sink is easy to clean and avoids the grout and caulk lines of older tops. In homes built for single-level living, we can talk about vanity height when the cabinet is being replaced anyway.
Laundry and hobby rooms
A remnant piece of quartz or granite often fits a laundry folding counter or craft desk at lower cost than a full slab.
Edges, overhangs and everyday comfort
Small details matter more over decades than the slab color does. Eased or lightly rounded edges are gentler on hips and forearms than a sharp square edge. Bar overhangs need proper support so nobody leans on an unsupported ledge. Where a cooktop sits in an island, we confirm the clearance around it. These choices go on your written quote so they are settled before fabrication.
Outdoor counters near the foothills
A built-in grill counter in an Anthem backyard takes full afternoon sun in a city where July highs average 101 degrees. Granite and other natural stones stand up to UV better than most quartz, which can fade outdoors. A lighter stone stays more comfortable to the touch on summer evenings.
Association rules
If your section of Anthem has a homeowners association, read its rules before scheduling. Interior countertop work generally does not change the exterior, but associations can set limits on contractor hours, vehicle parking and where debris can go, and gated sections require visitor access. Tell us which section you are in, and we will arrange entry and timing so the day runs smoothly.
Permits stay with the City of Henderson
Because Anthem was annexed into Henderson, any permit for moved plumbing, a new gas line or added circuits comes from Henderson's Building and Fire Safety department. A plain top replacement on existing cabinets with the sink in place typically does not involve that.

How Anthem Came Together
- Annexed in 1997. Henderson approved Anthem's first phase in November 1997 by annexing 2,535 acres of vacant land. About 72 acres of that phase were set aside for parks and recreation and 20 acres for a middle school.
- Opening day crowd. Del Webb began selling homes in mid-1998, and the grand opening on October 24, 1998 drew about 3,000 people. More than 1,000 homes sold within the first year.
- Three original subdivisions. Anthem opened with Sun City Anthem, a senior community whose buyers were offered free advice from professional home designers, plus Anthem Country Club and Coventry Homes at Anthem. The country club's golf course opened in April 1999.
- Grew past 5,000 acres. A 1999 land exchange with the Bureau of Land Management pushed Anthem past 5,000 acres. It was planned for 11,000 to 13,000 homes and about 30,000 residents at build-out.
- Hard water, hot summers. Anthem homes are served under the City of Henderson, whose 2024 water report rates the supply very hard at 16 grains per gallon. Henderson's July mean daily high is 101 degrees.

Anthem Questions
Is Anthem part of the City of Henderson?
Yes. Henderson annexed Anthem's first phase in November 1997, so permits for plumbing, gas or electrical changes go through Henderson's Building and Fire Safety department rather than Clark County.
What is the lowest-maintenance countertop for a Sun City Anthem kitchen?
For most people it is quartz. It does not need sealing, does not absorb spills, and mineral spots from hard water wipe off. Granite is also durable but should be resealed periodically.
Can you work around my association's gate and contractor rules?
Yes. Tell us your section and any rules on hours or parking. We will arrange gate access ahead of time and keep the truck and debris where the association allows.
Will you replace the countertop without replacing my cabinets?
In most Anthem homes the original cabinets are solid enough for stone. We check them during the measure and only recommend repairs if a box is damaged or out of level.
