Why Quartz Leads Kitchen Remodels

Quartz countertops are often the first material Henderson homeowners ask about, and for good reason. Engineered quartz is ground natural quartz held together with resin and pigment, pressed into slabs. That makes it non-porous: it needs no sealer, coffee and red wine wipe off, and the white or marble-look sample you choose is very close to the slab that arrives. For a family kitchen that gets daily use, few materials ask less of you.

The two things quartz does not like

Heat. Angi describes quartz as heat resistant but not heatproof. A pan straight off a burner, a slow cooker left running for hours, or an air fryer venting onto the surface can scorch or yellow the resin. Trivets and cutting boards solve it.

Sunlight. Angi and Caesarstone both say standard indoor quartz can fade or discolor with long UV exposure. Henderson gets intense sun most of the year, and Las Vegas averages about 86 percent of possible sunshine. Indoors, that matters for a counter under a big west-facing window or beside a sliding door with no shade. Outdoors, standard quartz is a no. For a patio or outdoor kitchen we steer you toward granite, quartzite or a surface rated for exterior use.

Grades and price

Quartz comes in quality tiers, and the tier shows up in the price. HomeGuide lists installed costs of about $50 to $95 per square foot for second-choice slabs, $75 to $110 for commercial grade and $90 to $200 for first-choice material. Lower tiers may show resin spots, small pits or slight color shifts; designer veined patterns sit at the top. For a typical 30 to 40 square foot kitchen, HomeGuide's range is about $1,500 to $8,000, and Forbes Home puts a decent-size kitchen at $3,000 to $7,500. Islands, waterfall ends and full-height backsplashes add to that.

Thickness, edges and overhangs

Most kitchen quartz is 3 cm, about 1 1/4 inches, and sits directly on the cabinets without plywood underneath. Eased and square edges are usually included; half bullnose, bevel and ogee profiles cost more per linear foot. Island overhangs for seating need support once they reach beyond what the manufacturer allows unsupported, so we plan brackets or corbels with you at the measure if your overhang is deep.

Seams and veining

A standard slab runs about 120 by 55 inches, so an L-shaped run or a long island often needs a seam. We plan seams at layout, away from the sink and cooktop where we can, and line up the vein direction across the joint. Bold veined patterns are the hardest to match, so we show you the seam location before anything is cut.

Quartz in Henderson homes

Many homes in Green Valley, Anthem, Seven Hills and Inspirada still have their original builder tops, and swapping those for quartz is a common upgrade. The city's very hard water leaves white mineral rings around faucets; on quartz they wipe off with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Skip abrasive powders and harsh chemicals, which can dull the finish, and do not set hot cookware down.

Caring for quartz

  • Wipe daily with mild dish soap and a soft cloth
  • Use trivets for anything from the stove or oven
  • Keep bleach, oven cleaner and paint stripper off the surface
  • Dry around the faucet to limit mineral spots
  • No sealing needed, ever

Quartz Countertops Questions

Can quartz countertops take direct sunlight?

Standard indoor quartz can fade or yellow with long UV exposure, according to Angi and Caesarstone. Indoors, a shade or UV film on a sunny west window helps. Outdoors, choose granite, quartzite or a surface made for exterior use.

Can I put a hot pan on quartz?

No. Quartz is heat resistant but not heatproof, and the resin can scorch or discolor. Use a trivet for anything coming off the stove or out of the oven.

Does quartz need to be sealed?

No. Quartz is non-porous, so it does not absorb liquids and never needs sealing. Daily cleaning with mild soap and water is enough.

How much does a quartz kitchen cost in Henderson?

HomeGuide's national range for a 30 to 40 square foot kitchen is about $1,500 to $8,000 installed, with first-choice slabs costing the most. Islands, waterfall ends and backsplashes add to it. We give you a written price after measuring.

Will hard water stain quartz?

Mineral deposits sit on the surface rather than soaking in, so they wipe off with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Drying the area around the faucet keeps rings from building up.
